Desire Without Attachment To Outcome

Desire without attachment to outcome might sound like a paradox at first. How can you desire or want something and yet not care about whether you get it or not?

While desire without attachment is an old personal development concept, I myself haven’t came across any great explanations of it, and therefore it took me a while to understand it.

What are some of your future goals? Maybe it’s to increase your income, get in shape, lose weight, improve your social skills, or find that special love of your life. These are all worthy goals. Having goals is essential for personal development and growth.

Without goals your life situation will become boring, dull, and predictable. Basically your life situation is your current circumstances and lifestyle. It’s important to differentiate between your life situation and your aliveness. As I mentioned your life situation are your current circumstances and situations in life.

Your aliveness on the other hand is separate from your life situation. Your aliveness is your present moment, it’s here and now regardless of your past or your future. The quality of your aliveness is completely up to you.

Have you ever met a disabled or handicapped person and thought how difficult it must be? well you were focused on their life situation, their circumstances. Maybe when you started talking to them, and getting to know them better, you realized that they were happier than most people. How come? Because they are conscious of their aliveness. They realize that while they can try improve their life situation (by taking physical therapy or getting an operation), they wont let their life situation dictate their current state of aliveness and happiness.

The difference between your life situation and your aliveness is essential to understanding the concept of desire without attachment to outcome. Ofter we associate our aliveness with our life situation thinking that losing weight or making more money will make us happy.

Losing weight or making more money might improve the quality of your life however it will not make you happy. If you have bad financial habits, and say you win 10 million dollars tomorrow, you will eventually end up wasting all that away the same way you waste your current income. It might take you a little longer, just like how most lottery winners end up accumulating lots and lots of debt several years after their winning date. This is also why lots of Hollywood celebrities and famous music artists end up abusing drugs and going into rehab after becoming very successful. Basically with all the money they just made, they can now afford to really indulge in their addictions and destructive habits, to the point where they end up having to get professional help.

So as you can see money might increase the quality of your life, but it certainly will not solve all your problems. Does that mean that you shouldn’t desire riches and wealth? of course not. You certainly should. With lots of money you get a lot of freedom, you can travel the world, eat the best foods, live in luxurious houses, and even do a lot of good for the community. However while having that desire you must realize, that making more money does not equal happiness. This is a great example of desire without attachment to outcome. You desire the money, and work hard to get it, yet you are conscious that it’s not your salvation, and therefore you chose to be alive and enjoy your current life situation. This is why your aliveness and your life situation are separate.

You can work on improving your future life situation, however you can improve your aliveness right now. Your aliveness is your current state of happiness. There is no reason for you not to be happy in the current moment no matter what your life situation is. Happiness is a choice. Once you are monitoring your aliveness and are happy, you will realize that yes you can desire future goals, however you will not beat yourself up about your progress or the outcome (which you can’t control anyway) since you are already happy in the present moment.

Once you desire a goal without attachment to outcome you suddenly become free of fears and self defeating habits. You will not feel guilty about your slow progress and beat yourself up about it. Instead you will do your best, and let the progress and result take care of themselves, because in the present moment you are already happy and complete. Fear will no longer slow you down, fear no longer can hold you back since you have no attachment to the outcome.

As I’ve been working on improving my social skills, I tended to let fear hold me back. Basically I was sometimes scared of talking to strangers and not receiving a good response, basically fear of rejection. What’s behind that fear? well I made the mistake of associating reaching my goals (having great social skills) with happiness. And therefore whenever I would experience rejection, I would feel that my social skills stink, and start feeling bad. This of course has slowed down my progress in improving my social skills. Now that I’m conscious of my aliveness, and already feel happy the way I am, I rarely ever hesitate to approach strangers, because I’m no longer attached to the outcome.

Your state of aliveness depends heavily on you accepting everything the way it is. This doesn’t mean that you wont work on improving your life situation, however there is no reason for you not to feel complete and happy right now. Once you accept everything the way it is, then you can desire without being attached to the outcome and really start transforming your life situation.

If you can’t accept your current life situation and are always looking to the future for happiness you will never be happy. Because no matter how many goals you achieve you’ll always want more, they’ll always be a next level and you will never stop to enjoy the present moment.

The practical application of desire without attachment is to set performance goals not outcome related goals. For example if you want to lose weight, decide on how often you will exercise (performance goal), instead of your actual weight loss. You can of course have a goal weight, however concentrate on your performance not the outcome. While trying to lose weight be conscious of the present moment and be greatfull for your current life situation. Enjoy life for what it is, and don’t try to delay your happiness until you reach your goal.

Feel Great Now – 5 Minute Exercise

Try this gratitude exercise. Different versions of this exercise are recommended in many personal development books, this is the version that worked best for me. Take out a sheet of paper, and for the next 5 minutes list everything that you are thankful for. List things that you feel great about in your life. Think about your health. Think about all the great knowledge you have access to. Think about all of today’s amazing technology. Think about all of the people in your life. Think about all of your great friends and other influential individuals in your life. Think about your family. Think about your job and your career. Think about all of the things you have achieved in the last 5 years. Maybe you have traveled and experienced new cultures. Maybe you have tried really exciting activities. Maybe you have learned many useful new skills. Think about those in your life who love you, appreciate and respect you. At the end of this exercise as you review your list, you will start feeling a lot better and appreciative of your life. You should maintain this list and add to it regularly. It’s also a great list to review when you are feeling down or lazy.

Caring What Everyone Thinks

pointing

We are programmed by society and the media to care about what everyone else thinks, and to always try to fit in. This process is very automated in our brain that we don’t even stop to question it most of the time. This obviously is a big roadblock to success because it prevents us from being who we really want to be and instead we become products of our society and surroundings.

A great example of this is how for the average man, asking a woman out on a date is a big deal. Because if she turns him down, he’ll feel a little hurt or foolish. Why is that? Because he cares about what she thinks of him.

The problem with caring about what others think is that we can’t control it in the first place. They’ll always be people that like you, and people that dislike you. Actually the most disliked people tend to be really wealthy or famous like many of todays movie stars and music artists who are constantly being bad mouthed in the media. Is part of their success due to not caring about the publics opinions? Maybe, I’m not sure, but it’s food for thought. More importantly, caring about others opinion of you assumes that we are all alike. It assumes that we were all born in the same towns, cities, or countries, went to the same schools, had the same parents, had the same circumstances in life etc. This is why what anyone thinks of you is usually based on superficial judgments they made even if they are a good friend or relative.

The long term effects of caring about what others think of us is leading a disappointing unfulfilling life. What’s worse than looking back on your life and realizing that most of the choices you made were strongly influenced by the opinions and judgments of others instead of your own preferences?

Why do we care what others think of us? While one can come up with many good sounding reasons, deep down there are two main reasons. One main reason is usually some sort of insecurity. When we are insecure about our lifestyles, our choices, or our actions, it’s easier to just go along with the flow, and try to please everyone. Otherwise, if we decide to stop caring what everyone thinks of us, and live life however we please, we will start receiving criticism and start generating a lot of attention. A great example of this is feeling too insecure to ask your boss for a raise. You feel that if you ask for a raise you might give you boss the wrong idea, and since your insecure about your quality of work, thinking it isn’t all that great to start with, you decide it’s better to just be quiet instead of generating a lot of attention. The other main reason is a scarcity mentality. A scarcity mentality is where we think there is a limited set number of resources, opportunities or options. Going back to the “asking for a raise” example, an employee might feel that if he starts asking and demanding too much maybe he’ll get fired, and not be able to find any other jobs. Of course this isn’t true because there will always be numerous jobs and opportunities, however we often have this ridiculous scarcity mentality.

How do you stop caring? Not caring what anyone thinks of you is a working process, you just have to make the decision that from now on you will not care. You also have to be conscious of this decision repeating “I don’t care what anyone thinks of me” in your head as you are making choices in life. This will ensure that you aren’t making choices based on others judgments or opinions. Also to clarify, there is a big exception to this rule which is breaking the law. You should certainly care about your countries laws and respect the authorities.

While caring about what others think of us and our actions can be a big roadblock to success, we still need to maintain a balanced perspective. If one stops caring completely about what anyones thinks of him, he will not be able to change or grow. What was it that initiated the last goal you made? I’m sure it had to do with another human being achieving it, working towards it, or recommending it. Simply put, next time someone gives you their opinion you will need to pause and consider whether it’s valuable or not. If that person understands where you are coming from, has a similar background and similar personal values, then their opinion generally will be more valuable. However you should try to be more honest with yourself and make sure that you are not letting others opinions or judgments hold you back from doing what you want in life.

This article is part of my Roadblocks to Success series. I will discussing more Roadblocks to Success in upcoming articles.

5 Reasons to Monitor Your Breathing

Monitoring your breathing is very easy to do and will improve your focus, alertness, voice tone, fitness, and even help you face your fears. It’s very simple to improve your breathing and you will notice great results immediately.

To improve your breathing you first need to monitor it and be a little conscious of it. Most people naturally inhale and exhale rather quickly, similar to someone who just climbed a flight of stairs, and is a bit out of breath. A better breathing technique is deep breathing. To breathe deeply simply inhale for 2-4 seconds, you should feel your stomach slightly expanding, and then again slowly exhale for 2-4 seconds. You should not feel any discomfort as long as your inhaling and exhaling slowly. You should actually feel a sense of relaxation and peacefulness. Monitoring your breathing is a working process, the more you do it, the more benefits you will experience. The following benefits are just a few that I personally experienced.

1. Becoming More Focused

Often when we are trying to focus on getting a certain task done, our mind becomes distracting, thinking about all kinds of past or future activities instead of just fulling being engaged in the present moment. This obviously wastes time, and is very inefficient. For example as I’m sitting here writing this post, my mind will occasionally drift and start thinking about my earlier workout this morning, and then it will think about meeting with a couple of my friends later tonight. At this moment I’m trying to focus fully on writing this post. So obviously thinking about what I did this morning is a distraction and also thinking about what I’m doing later tonight is very distracting. If I need to finalize my plans with my friends, then I can do that after I’m done writing this, but constantly thinking and worrying about it is useless, distracting and even a bit stressful.

One technique for being more focused and in the present moment is to start monitoring your breathing. Use deep breathing, inhale slowly for 2-4 seconds, feel the air going in through your nose, traveling through your chest, expanding your lungs and stomach, and raising your shoulders. Then as you slowly exhale for 2-4 seconds, feel the air leaving all those different parts of your body as it comes out of your nose. Notice how relaxing this is, and how it cut out any detracting useless thoughts you might of had going through your mind. Use this technique as often as you need to become more focused and present. If you are interested in learning more about this phenomenon of becoming more present minded I really recommend you read the Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.

2. Becoming More Alert

As I discussed above, when you monitor your breathing, you will start becoming more present minded. As you become more present minded you will become a lot more alert. This is very beneficial during certain activities such as driving a car or participating in a social interaction.

Try deep breathing next time you drive, and slowly start noticing how wide your field of vision is. When stopped at a traffic light or an intersection, you should be able to look straight ahead and still see whats on your right and left, creating a 180 degree field of vision. If you keep looking straight a head and even slightly look down you should start seeing behind your eyes increasing your field of vision even more.

In social interactions, do you notice how sometimes you become a bit distracted, and even miss a few words or a sentence the other person said? Try deep breathing and notice how you are a lot more alert to what the other person is saying. You will also start becoming more alert to any kind of changes in their body language and facial expression vastly improving your ability to interpret and understand what they are saying.

3. Managing Your Fears

I often recommend working on your fears and getting out of your comfort zone as a great personal development technique. However often in our day to day lives we need to do things that might make us nervous or a bit scared. Whether you need to ask a stranger for help, or ask your boss for a raise, you know you have to do it, yet you start feel very nervous when you are about to and might even back down. Feeling scared is normal and healthy however you need to manager it and be able to push through it. Next time you are feeling scared or nervous, just try slowing down and breathe deeply. This sounds very simple however it works. I used this often when working on my social skills and learning to talk to strangers. I would be very nervous as I was approaching a stranger and as a result would even stutter or speak in a very low nervous voice. As I started using deep breathing, I noticed I started becoming more calm and collected as I would initiate conversations with strangers.

4. A Clearer Louder Voice

Having a clear loud voice is very beneficial. It doesn’t matter how you naturally sound, you can always improve your voice. Some of the advantages of having a clear loud voice is not having to repeat yourself, capturing others attention, and easily being able to talk in loud noisy venues. You will even notice that most managers and CEOs tend to have a louder clearer voice. Having a loud clear voice will greatly improve all of your social interactions, you will be able to quickly capture others attention. Most voice training programs recommend monitoring your breathing to improve your voice. Try this: breathe in deeply, feeling your stomach expand, and as you exhale start talking, notice how your voice sound louder, more resonating, and even a bit clearer. You might not be able to hear the difference yourself, however if you use a voice recorder, it will be very obvious. The more you monitor and improve your breathing the better your voice will become.

5. Better Fitness Workouts

Whether you are doing cardiovascular training or lifting weight monitoring your breathing will greatly improve your workouts. If you are doing cardio, try deep breathing only through your nose, keeping your mouth shut. Monitor your deep breathing and make sure it stays at a slow steady pace. As you try this you will notice that you can do longer cardio workouts without quickly running out of breath. If you are lifting weights try exhaling during the tougher part of the exercise. For example, if it’s a push exercise like the bench press, as you lower the bar try inhaling deeply through your mouth, and as you push the bar back up, you should exhale a burst of air through your mouth. If you are doing a pull exercise such as a bicep curl, then you would exhale as you curl the weight up, and inhale as you lower the weight back down. Using this technique will help you lift more weights and build your muscles quicker.

Hard Work or a Secret Formula?

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. – Thomas Edison

Consistency and hard work are two of the least discussed methods for success these days. Much of today’s marketing and advertising is about selling a magic pill, a secret formula, or a newly discovered shortcut that will transform your life within a few minutes hours or days and poof you’ll reach your goal and live happily every after. Whether a company is trying to sell a weight loss product or a home-business starter kit, they are usually promising extreme success very quickly. Advertisers will also associate that extreme success with happiness and fulfillment. They will show how happy Stacy looks after she just lost 20 pounds. They wont bring up how many of her older friends are now a bit jealous of Stacy getting all the attention and prefer not to go out with her to social events. They will not tell you about how Stacy dislikes getting constantly accused by many of her relatives and friends of being way too skinny, or overhearing rumors about herself having an eating disorder. Here is a related article if you are not convinced:
You Think Making Money or Losing Weight Equals Happiness? Think Again

Success only Raises The Quality of Your Life

To clarify, I’m not saying that losing weight isn’t great, it is, in fact I’m currently doing my own weight loss challenge. Maintaining a healthy weight, being in a great shape, and regularly exercising will certainly raise the quality of your life allowing you to do and experience a lot more. However, I must add success will not solve all of your problems, in fact once you have lost the weight you will have a few new problems. The two Stacy problems I mentioned above I actually discovered from hanging out with a great friend of mine after she lost a lot of weight. I’m just clarifying that there are no shortcuts to happiness. Simply achieving a goal will make you happy momentarily, however after a little while you will want the next thing.

Always Wanting What You Don’t Have

Being stuck in this cycle of wanting one thing after the next is perfect for advertisers and marketers because guess what? They will always have something to sell you. By the way I’m really interested in advertising and marketing and think it’s great and necessary for selling a product, especially really good valuable products. For example many of the self help and personal development products that helped me grow the most had very good advertising and marketing behind them which is why I was attracted to buying them in the first place. However as a consumer I try to stay conscious of this process of always wanting what I don’t have, because it allows me to have more realistic expectations when purchasing a product. So next time a product appeals to you as a magic pill or a secret formula, pause and remember past products you have purchased because of this same appeal and how they turned out. This will help you save a lot of the time wasted in going after shortcuts and the secret forumlas. So what will you do with this free time? Consistent Hard Work.

What about the Secret Formulas that do Work?

All the so-called secrets of success will not work unless you do. – Author Unknown

Maybe you are still debating the value of hard work and can even think of a few secret formulas or magic pills that really do work. A great example is the Atkins diet. The Atkins diet is where you avoid any foods with carbohydrates and sugars. If you have tried this diet yourself you will see that it does work and you will lose weight very quickly, however you will discover that it’s very hard work after the first few days. You will constantly crave bread and pasta, and generally have a hard time finding Atkins friendly foods in social events. Even if you lose all of your excess weight on the Atkins diet, it’s very hard (if not impossible) to maintain the weight off as you are gradually reintroducing carbs to your diet. So I guess what I’m trying to convey is that even shortcuts or magic pills that do deliver what’s promised usually require some hard work.

Consistent Hard Work

Continuous effort – not strength or intelligence – is the key to unlocking our potential – Liane Cordes

While consistent hard work might not sound very appealing, it is a great way to achieve fulfilling success. Hard work is always guaranteed to pay off, even if you don’t achieve your goal, consistently putting in the day to day work will help you grow a more disciplined self controlled character ready to tackle on your next big goal. Hard work is consistently doing the day to day tasks whether or not you are seeing results. Of course to be able to work hard on something you must really want it. When you make working hard one of your values you are no longer detracted by all of those things you were contemplating or thinking that would be “nice to have”, you end up going after what you really want.

Hard Work Example

Some people dream of success while others wake up and work hard at it. – Author Unknown

The best example of hard work is a healthy approach to losing weight and keeping the pounds off. This approach will usually require that you eat more healthy foods than fast foods or sweats, however it will still give you some wiggle room. While this approach is gradual therefore slower it’s easier and therefore the chances of you maintaining it are higher. Also it will help you build healthy eating habits that you will have for life, leaving you feeling more energized every day you wake up. This approach will usually require some form of exercise, which will help you get red of your stress anyways. As you are exercising gradually you will start burning fat, and eventually building more lean muscle mass. This lean muscle mass will not only help you look better in most of your clothing, it will also decrease your chances of coming in contact with many of the disease related to being fat or overweight. Check out my Project Weight Loss

Working Smart while Working Hard

Working hard doesn’t mean having an unbalanced life where you are constantly working 10+ hour days. While some people are very passionate about their work that they enjoy working the 10+ hours that doesn’t mean that you have to. You should be trying to work smart. One way to work smart is to eliminate unnecessary tasks that are more time intensive yet provide a little or no payoff. A quick way to find out what tasks you can eliminate is to ask yourself in the morning, If I had only 2 hours to get one days worth of work done, what projects/tasks would I skip or not worry about as much? Another way to work smart is to outsource very time intensive boring tasks. A great resource about working smart is the 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris where he discuses in detail many techniques for working smart.

7 Roadblocks to Success

Take a few moments to answer the following questions by reflecting on your current lifestyle and circumstance

  • Are you successful financially or do you have credit card debt and are living from paycheck to paycheck?
  • How do you rate your love life? What about your sex life? Is it fulfilling?
  • What about your social life, are you the life of the party or the outsider trying to sneak in?
  • How much do you like your body shape? Is it satisfying when you look in the mirror or are you feeling a little ashamed of the extra pounds you have put on over the past weeks, months, or years?
  • Do you have a really exciting life? Do you often jump out of bed and can’t wait to start a new day?

Success or Failure is Usually a Pattern in One’s Life

I love writing about personal development mainly for two reason. First it allows me to reflect on myself. Secondly it forces me to constantly work on growing, improving and developing myself, otherwise I would have nothing new to write about.

Each time I meet a person who’s very successful in one area of his (or her) life, I keep noticing a reoccurring pattern. Usually he is successful in several other areas of his life. Here is a related article about how to become great and successful in any field.

Similarly, each time I meet a person who’s a failure in one area of his life, generally that failure seems to be a pattern throughout other areas of his life. Now I must clarify, by failure I’m talking about a reoccurring failure over at least months and years where there isn’t any progress, instead a lot of disappointment and even setbacks. I’m a big believer of trying and failing until one succeeds however this isn’t the kind of failure I’m talking about in this article. A good example of what I mean by failure is someone who’s constantly getting a new job for 6 months and then quitting it and repeating this for 3-4 years instead of maybe thinking he needs to switch his career choice in the first place. Another good example is someone who’s trying to lose weight who has been trying one diet after the other for 2-3 years now, losing the pounds and putting them back on, instead of starting to question if diets work in the first place. I can certainly relate to this last example which is why I started my Project Weight Loss where I’m working on implementing healthy eating and exercising habits for a lifetime and losing the weight slowly instead of just following a fad diet.

How to Become Great in any Field – Success Secrets Revealed

I realized while writing this article that it might sound very negative. Please read the whole article before making any judgments. I realize there are plenty of “nice sounding” advice out there, most of which doesn’t work. While sometimes writers are very careful not to offend most of their readers, I’m more concerned about offering real value to my readers. While I do respect all of my readers, I have to warn this isn’t a “feel good” post, it does touch on topics that might be sensitive issues for some. Writing this post was a wakeup call for me, since I’m also working on many of topics I discuss. I’m still working on implementing and maintaining many of the strategies and tips I provide. All of the strategies have worked for me personally in one way or another. I’ve also noticed many of the extraordinary individuals I know in my life, who are great in their specific field, use some if not all of the strategies.

I’ve made it a habit to study great people, and have been doing it now for several years. While there is no mathematical equation that guarantees greatness, there are many commonalities that are shared by great people. These commonalities don’t just apply to a particular set of fields or expertise. Interestingly if you take a person who is very successful in one field, and put him into another one usually they’ll be able to achieve a very similar level of success in the new field. Of course it might take them a year or two or even more to catch up and learn the new field. Yet after they catch up on the basic fundamentals of that new field, they usually start progressing and succeeding in it at a very fast rate.

Before getting to the tips and strategies I need to address what I mean by great. I don’t simply mean great as in slightly better than average. By great I mean spectacular. Becoming great in any field is simple yet it isn’t easy. Becoming great is simple because there are no secrets or magic pills. As you read on you will notice that many of the strategies and tips I provide are very simple and make a lot of sense. Yet most people aren’t going to be great, and this is why becoming great is difficult. Most people are average, and will stay average for the rest of their lives. Don’t take my word for it, just look at mainstream America today. Here are some quick stats for you…

Percent of non-institutionalized adults age 20 years and over who are overweight or obese: 66.3

Percent of non-institutionalized adults age 20 years and over who are obese: 32

Source: CDC.gov

50% of deaths in America are cause by heart disease. Heart disease is easily preventable by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, eating nutritious foods, and regularly exercising.

Source: World Health Organization

Top 20% of income earning households in American hold about 80% of the wealth, leaving the bottom 80% of household (the mainstream) with only 20% of the wealth.

Source: UCSC.edu

The average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day

Source: Nielsen Co

Only 14% of Americas say they are “really satisfied” with their jobs.

Source: Conference Board

Now the mainstream is hard for us to relate to at times, and stats are stats, they aren’t very tangible, they are just numbers. But think about 10 of your close friends, family members and coworkers. Are most of them satisfied with their weight and have a healthy balanced lifestyle? or are they jumping from one diet to the next trying to lose a few pounds? Do they earn a satisfactory income? or are they getting deeper and deeper into credit card debt? Do they really love their jobs, are they eager to wake up in the morning to go to work? or are they always complaining about their coworkers, and other work conditions? Overall do they sound like they are satisfied with their lives? Are they usually happy and full of joy that spills over into other peoples lives? or are they usually sucking everyone else’s positive energy?

I hope the stats and questions have clarified what I mean by great. Someone who really likes their job and is excited to get their work done is great because most people aren’t very satisfied with their jobs. What’s really alarming to me isn’t the fact that most people aren’t satisfied with their current jobs. What’s alarming is that most people still spend the rest of the lives working jobs they don’t particularly enjoy. I’m all about change and transformation. If you could choose any career path and are guaranteed abundance and limitless success in it, what would it be? It’s interesting to me that most people will have multiple answers to this question, most people can think of a job or two they’d enjoy a lot more than there current one, yet most people never try to switch jobs or careers. Most people never even try to research that potential new job and learn about how to be successful in it, and gradually try transitioning over. I know what this feels like personally because I wasn’t happy with my last job, and I’m currently in the transitional state. Is it easy? No. I know how difficult it can be because it took me 6-12 months of not liking my last job to decide to finally try transitioning over to a different job.

Here are the practical steps to becoming great in any field or area of your life…

Strategy #1 – Make sure you really want what you are going after, make sure it’s a worthy goal, one that’s tied to your own personal values.

Make sure you don’t just want that goal because of superficial reasons including financial wealth or others praise and adoration. It’s hard to become a great doctor if you are just in it for the money. On the other hand if you really want to help others in pain, becoming a great doctor will be much easier, and the money will follow. I’ll never forget my health teacher in high school. He actually got accepted into several med school, and ended up not going. He realized that becoming a doctor and all is nice, but what he really wanted was to help other people. He realized that educating high school students about developing a healthy lifestyle would prevent them from getting dangerous diseases in the first place. He was one of the most passionate teachers I had. Of course teaching isn’t as lucrative as medicine. I also think it’s reasonable, even natural to want financial abundance and freedom. All I’m saying is that if a superficial reason such as “making more money” is the top reason you are trying to become great in a certain field then it will be very difficult. External motivators such as money and people’s praise will only take you so far, however if a goal or a field of interest is strongly tied to your personal values, you will be internally motivated. So when you first are failing in that field, aren’t seeing any money yet, and everyone around you is telling you to give up already, you will still be motivated from the inside, and will be able to keep going. Of course if you aren’t sure what your personal values are, you will not be able to create internal motivation. Take some time to list values, characteristics and ideas you really care about. Some of mine include positivity, an abundance mentality, personal growth and transformation, giving to others, financial freedom, traveling and learning new skills. Sometimes two values will be in disagreement with each other. In that case you will need to prioritize your values. Your values will change, I would recommend modifying or updating them every 3 months as necessary.

Being true to your personal values will be difficult. It will usually involve going against the mainstream at times, and sticking out. Going back to the example I mentioned of my health teacher and his career change decision, I’m sure when he made that decision many of his friends and maybe even family disagreed with him. I can just hear them thinking and maybe even saying “who in their right mind would give up being a doctor to become a teacher?” But then again remember that most people (or the “mainstream”) aren’t very satisfied with their jobs. That just means that they end up pursuing a career usually for the wrong reasons, I would guess because of external superficial motivators. Therefore in most cases the mainstream or the common advice usually doesn’t help those who want to be great. Usually mainstream advice is what keeps people average, and just good instead of great. A quick helpful rule of thumb is to only seriously consider the advice of those who already achieved great spectacular success in your field or have already achieved the goal you are going after.

One way to make it easier to stick to your personal values is to regularly spend time with friends that have those same values. What if no one in your current social circle has those same values? Well this is where you will need to start making new friends, and maybe even become a bit more socially savvy to attract other people. Of course making new friends might not be the easiest or most comfortable skill to learn. Most people become nervous when they have to even make small talk with strangers. This leads to my next strategy on becoming great.

Strategy #2 – Regularly get out of your comfort zone

There are many advantages to getting out of your comfort zone. However the main advantage is that outside of your comfort zone is where you will learn life’s greatest lessons. It’s also where you will personally develop and transform at a great speed. Regularly getting out of your comfort zone will also dramatically increase your learning and adaptability speed. Getting out of your comfort zone usually involves doing something new that perhaps even makes you a little nervous. Going through this experience will teach you all kinds of skills, and multiply the size of your personal comfort zone. You will eventually start noticing that in situations that make most people nervous, you tend to be more calm and relaxed. Getting out of your comfort zone regularly will also help you develop your creativity. You will notice that by expanding your personal comfort zone, you will start seeing outside the box more often than others. How is getting out of your comfort zone related to becoming great in your field? When you are back in your field, you will realize this new creativity and all the indirect skills you acquired are very handy. You will start coming up with solutions you never even thought existed before. You will start seeing all kinds of new effective and efficient ways of doing things that you missed in the past.

Getting out of your comfort zone regularly will be difficult and intimidating at times. I remember once walking into this very advanced aerobic kick-boxing class for the first time and I was 10 minutes late. I was thinking hey I need to try something new. Of course when I walked in the class has already started, and there were only 3 other students in the class. Normally these classes have about 10-15 students. All 3 other students were very experienced, in great shape, I found out later that they have been taking these classes for months, sometimes even twice a day. Saying that I looked foolish in the class is an understatement. It’s funny now, but during the class I remember feeling almost sick inside, because I was so off beat and felt very intimidated by how good all the other students were. Of course it felt like an eternity until the class was over, but hey afterwards I felt amazing. It hit me. Only 3 other students are good enough to even take this class. It’s like I jumped into the ring with a pro boxer without having any boxing experience. How many people are willing to do that? I also felt this very rewarding feeling of accomplishment inside. I remember for the rest of that day I was in this very peaceful happy state of mind. It was a great feeling.

One piece of advice I have is to get out of your comfort zone gradually. Also make sure that getting out of your comfort zone wont compromise your physical safety. Expect getting out of your comfort zone to feel scary and intimidating, yet remember that this is mostly your perception, and discomfort is a small price to pay on your pursuit to becoming great. When you get out of your comfort zone don’t worry so much about your performance. Say you try karaoke singing since it always made you nervous and you stink, that shouldn’t matter, you have tried it, gotten out of your comfort zone and that’s all that counts. Building friendships with adventurous people will make getting out of your comfort zone easier. Adventurous people tend to seek the excitement of exploring and discovering the new and great unknown.

Strategy #3 – Pay attention to what the great majority in your field are doing. Usually this great majority are following common rules or tactics and therefore achieve the same results and average success. Experiment with doing things differently, or even doing the opposite of what everyone else in your field is doing.

Why do most people only achieve average success? well it’s because they are usually looking around to see how everyone else is doing things and automatically copying it. It’s important to study how everyone else is performing a certain task, yet realize that if you don’t improve this process, you will only get average results. Usually people who are great in their field are regarded as “strange individuals” before they achieve any success. Usually they are doing things differently, they are adding in little tweaks here and there. However once those “strange individuals” achieve greatness, all that strangeness is forgotten and people start embracing their theories. Usually great people can look at a process that has been performed for ages the same way, make a couple of quick inexpensive tweaks that will say double productivity. Great people usually think outside of the box. How can you develop this creativity and think outside of the box? How can you be able to see tweaks and solutions that no one else in you field sees? Well the answer is simple: by regularly getting out of your comfort zone and by constantly learning new skills. This expands and diversifies your perspective in general. Since most people live inside of their comfort zone for most of their lives, they don’t really develop much. They don’t really learn that many new skills or acquire many new perspectives especially after they graduate college. Also they don’t travel much and as a result they don’t come across different traditions and ideologies that will force them to reflect and question their own practices, habits and thoughts.

First realize that any process or traditional way of doing something can probably be improved. Don’t limit your potential with the current way everyone else in your field or area of expertise is doing things. Also realize that when you start doing things differently, many of your experiments and attempts will fail, but that’s ok. Remember you are pursuing greatness, and expect it to be a bumpy ride. Don’t be afraid of failure. Actually the existence of failure is questionable. As long as you are learning from your mistakes you are gaining experience, failure doesn’t really exist, it’s a negative label. Also be ready to receive some criticism from others in your field when you start doing things differently. When another person in your field sees you doing things differently it’s threatening to them on an unconscious level. Mainly because they haven’t taken the time to examine why they are doing things in a particular way, they just copied the process from someone else, and are actually very insecure about it. Most people in general don’t stop and question things, they are just copy cats. Make sure your life is more than what society declares “appropriate” or “worthy” or “respectable”. Make sure you are living in accordance to your personal values, and doing things the best way you deem fit.

Strategy #4 – Offer unique original value in your field

After following the first 3 strategies this will generally take care of itself. Declaring and living in accordance with your personal values, regularly getting out of your comfort zone and regularly questioning the way most people are doing things in your field will give you that unique edge. The unique edge is where you will be able to offer unique original value to others. Now this doesn’t mean that you wont be able to use other’s previous experience in your field or wiser mentors advice, it just means that you will be able to provide a fresh new perspective in your field. This fresh new perspective is what will allow you to offer unique value.

For example toothpaste traditionally offered the value of healthy clean white teeth, until someone came along and thought of flavored toothpaste. While flavored toothpaste provides all the traditional value of toothpaste, it additionally provides a more delicious fruity after taste. Now the idea of adding flavor to toothpaste is very simple, yet it’s interesting how one brand came up with it first, and all the rest copied the idea. This idea is an example of offering unique original value. Of course adding flavor to any consumer item isn’t an original idea in itself. But combining this idea with toothpaste is what created original unique value. Your personal values, all the new skills you’ll learn from getting out of your comfort zone, and your creativity creates a very unique you. As you develop that unique you, you will be able to combine ideas and even come up with fresh new ones that will allow you to provide original unique value in your field. This will certainly make you great in your field.

Discovery Not Invention – Success Secret Revealed

In improv comedy, students are taught to discover not invent. Invention works great in movies and tv-shows where talented experienced writers thoughtfully and strategically invent a script for actors to read. Since improv comedy isn’t scripted, rather based on an audience suggestion, an improviser must be willing to make discoveries. A great improviser is willing to walk on stage without any planned lines or actions in mind. Once on stage an improviser has to focus on being in the moment, or rather present minded. This freeing state of mind allows the improviser to start seeing a setting for the scene based on past experiences and associations the brain made with the audience suggestion. Building on that small discovery an improviser then comes up with a line appropriate for that setting. A few lines in a row and the improviser has discovered a full dialog. While this might sound complicated it’s rather simple all it requires is the willingness to step on stage, and take the risk of looking like a fool.

When compared with discovery, invention is too much work, it requires great ideas that are thoughtfully organized and presented. Invention works great for certain activities such as planning goals and prioritizing. However discovery is essential for other activities like learning new skills or pursuing new endeavors. Discovery simply defined is learning by doing. It requires one to take the first action step right away to learn from the success or failure that results. A good example is an employee who’s thinking about starting their own business on the side. The employee can do tons of research, and market analysis however they have no idea what they are in for until they actually take the first step such as contacting a potential client. Many people actually get stuck in the “invention” stage excessively researching the market, trying to create a bulletproof business plan, end up feeling overwhelmed and never actually start the business. While planning is important for any business idea to succeed, the willingness to learn by doing is equally essential. One must start taking action steps, one step at a time learning from each failure and success. This doesn’t mean that one should having a gambling mentality and hope they’ll just get lucky and succeed. It just means to come up with a quick simple plan and put it into action right away, preferably taking the first action step now. This eliminates procrastination and increases the chances of following through.

To discover one must accept failure as a prerequisite to success. Those who achieve the most have generally tried and failed the most. One’s ability to persevere through failure, accepting it as a learning experience, is a very accurate indicator of their future success. Failure is how one internalizes many of life’s greatest lessons. Failure is also what builds character and tests persistence. Discovery can’t be avoided, it’s a natural part of learning a new skill or pursing a worthy cause. Being conscious and aware of the discovery process, one can use it intentionally to their advantage.
